DAY 2 16/11/00| An early rise
for Greg and myself saw us fuelling up and on the road to Sydney by 7:45am. We drove into
the rain just near Goulburn and it continued to drizzle/rain all the way to Sydney. We
pulled up at Matt Smiths house at about 11am with moderate rain falling. Matt had
recorded 110mm of rain in the past 48hrs and was glad to be leaving Sydney and the rain
behind. A quick check of the sat pic and the MSLP soon saw us cramming into Gregs
tiny little car (3 people and luggage didnt really fit in the Corolla) and heading
down the highway towards Dubbo - our planned meeting place with Anthony Cornelius.
Greg, Matt and myself heading towards Dubbo in the rain on the M4. Capture: Andrew McDonald. The drive proved to be highly uninteresting in terms of weather as it rained on and off for the entire 4.5hour drive. We arrived at Dubbo at about 3:45pm and after checking into a cabin for the night we headed down to the local library to check the models and sat pics. A nice broad trough was sitting over the W parts of the E three state of Australia stretching from W Vic up into the QLD/NT border. This trough was to become our target for the next few days. We also noted that a few cells had popped up on the sat pics and lightning tracker out near Burke and Cobar (about 300km to our W and NW) which held some promise for the next day. It was interesting to note that the librarian and the caravan park owner were both saying that it had been raining for over a week (due to the persistent inland trough which had been sitting there for a long time without moving at all). Anthony Cornelius made it to Dubbo at about 5pm and we met him back at the cabin where there was a transfer of luggage to reduce the strain on Gregs car. Both vehicles were fitted with AM CB radios which proved to be perfect for this type of chasing, allowing conversations to flow freely between each vehicle whether during a storm or not (an excellent investment). A quick meal at Pizza Hut in Dubbo (well as quick as an "all you can eat" place can be anyway....hehehe) and we were off to the cabin to watch each others video footage from previous chases. This went on well into the night and I think we eventually stopped it all at about 1:30am. |
