TDU2K  ThunderDownUnder2000

DAY 1  15/11/00

Greg Browning and I had been making arrangements with Anthony Cornelius and Matt Smith for a few days as to our exact movements for the first two or three days of the chase so as to meet up as early as possible and maximise chasing time. After finishing work mid-afternoon I arrived home and frantically ran around finalising my packing while in the mean time watching the radar closely as Cb’s developed across central and eastern Victoria. The weak trough had been generating pulse storms for a few days now (since about November 10th) and they had gradually been developing closer to Melbourne. As it turns out, the day we are due to leave for TDU2K they drift over the NE suburbs (my place).

Greg arrived at about 4:45pm just as the first cell passed over my house. Rumbling thunder continued for 25-30 minutes while we packed the car and by 5:15pm we were on the road. We were heading north along the Hume Highway and aimed straight at the middle of some nice pulse storms in south central Victoria (en route to NE Vic/SE NSW). A few flashes of lightning and some heavy rain gave us a mere taste of what was to come over the next 3 weeks of chasing. We cleared the second and final storm near Kilmore and we continued heading north aiming to get as far as possible. A quick food and fuel stop in Albury was our last stop before crashing for the night at Yass in SE NSW.
